Governor Ted Strickland has flip flopped on abstinence education and is putting our children’s health at risk, by rejecting federal abstinence education support.

The governor has refused free federal funds for abstinence education in favor of less comprehensive programs that don’t provide the tools and instruction to help students make the choice to wait to have sex and develop healthy relationships.

Governor Strickland has quietly abolished the abstinence education office for Ohio and wants to replace the strong message of abstinence education with a curriculum developed at Ohio taxpayers’ expense that offers much less to Ohio teens.

Abstinence education provides teens with information about contraception and STDs, while emphasizing that abstaining from sex is the only way to avoid all physical and emotional risks associated with causal sex.

The CDC just reported an estimated 19 million new sexually transmitted diseases. Our children deserve to know the truth about the risks of casual sex and how to avoid them through abstinence education.

It time for Governor Strickland to stop weakening student sexual health education in Ohio by diverting funds away from abstinence education, and accept the free federal money for abstinence education—the only proven way for young teens to stay safe and develop healthy relationships.
